Reunion
I went to my 20 year high school reunion this weekend. It was a great party. I had a lot of fun. Talked to people I haven’t seen in years. I’m in a picture with someone I never believed I’d ever be photographed with. But good times were had by all.
My only complaint with the event is about the music. For anyone planning a reunion, please keep in mind that people are there to talk, and catch up. Keep the volume down for at least the first 3 hours of the event, then you can turn it up to deafening volumes. I’m all for loud music, but not when I’m trying to talk to people I haven’t seen in 20 years. My throat STILL hurts from all the screaming I did Saturday night. And one other musical complaint. When you’re DJ-ing the reunion of a group of people aged 37-39, don’t play Britney Spears’s new song. I don’t care if you think Duran Duran sucks. DJ-ing isn’t about YOU, it’s about the people you’re playing the music for, Duran Duran may not be great music, but it’s the nostalgia factor you’re going for at a reunion when you play the song. What kind of nostalgia factor does Britney bring to the Class of 1988?
Not once during the screaming of the night, did I ever pause and say, “Oh I LOVED this song!” A good mobile DJ (even one who is a member of our class) would have gone for the nostalgia factor and not the “I’m so cool I’m a DJ with modern music” factor. I like Rollins Band, Beastie Boys, The Raincoats, Matisyahu, Nine Inch Nails and Hole but I’m in touch with people enough to know that not everyone appreciates loud, screaming, angry music. I wouldn’t be playing that music at the reunion. I’d go with Tainted Love and Squeeze maybe even Ratt for the big hair crowd. I’d be digging up all the 80’s music I could find, even the one-hit-wonders that people may have forgotten they loved. That’s the sign of a good DJ, someone who cares…not someone who feels you’re at their mercy and they will teach you about good music.
That rant is over… on to the next…
For everyone who SAID they’d go to the reunion who ended up not going… You are a loser!
